The CAPCO Board Secretary Committee organized a workshop on 30th December 2015. The Committee, one of the 10 affiliated committees under CAPCO, was composed of Board Secretaries from current CAPCO members. Around 20 Board Secretaries from listed companies of Shanghai Stock Exchange (SSE) and Shenzhen Stock Exchange (SZSE) joined the workshop.

The workshop focused on promoting professional development and core competencies of Board Secretary in Chinese Listed Companies - in order that could play a good part in help maintaining capital market stability. The participants agreed that there remained certain gap between personal ability, occupational accomplishment and responsibility of Board Secretary and actual demands of good corporate governance upon themselves. For the purpose of optimize the Board Secretary Professional Qualification Certification Program, the Committee suggested regulatory bodies to give full play to the role of CAPCO as a Self-Regulatory Organization on the basis of a free market.

During the workshop, Board Secretaries attributed the recent turmoil on China’s equity market to a complex web of factors, including volatility of surrounding market environment, uncertainty over the policy switch of Chinese currency, over-interpretation of the pressure on large shareholder’s sell-down. Besides, the new market system appeared to be unaccommodated with domestic investor structure which was mainly composed of retail investors. The committee further concluded that the newly issued regulation by China Securities Regulatory Commission (CSRC) to restrict the large shareholders’ sell-off rate will play a positive role in helping stabilize the market and restore investor confidence.
